Lotus Notes, MS Excel, Javascript, and ‘C’ have been some of the software used to develop real-time, trading,
quality assurance, and mission-critical application for internal and external clients.
Software testing, as part of a Quality Assurance team, management of
special projects, and business analysis (gathering and writing user
documents, specifications, etc.) were some of the roles that I filled
during my first major job after college.
I entered the sales side of the
employment world when I was given the opportunity to be a sales
liaison, first handling the major accounts of Citibank and Dean Witter,
and later for various hedge funds, banks, shipping, brokerage and news
firms in Midtown New York.
The signing of a contract with
Merrill Lynch took longer than expected, leaving me with a great deal
of time and the discomfort of having little to do, so I created a MS
Access database for the sales team and was given the opportunity to
transfer departments and learn Lotus Notes “on the job” (which led to
certifications as Principle Certified Lotus Professional.
The training as a software engineer, business analyst, and sale
background enabled the understanding of clients’ needs and the skill to
translate those needs into items that were delivered (pre-packaged, or
individually developed). These skills have been used for the remainder
of my career in the area of financial services.
The research of patents and the
writing of the claims, and completion of a patent application that I
delivered personally to the U.S. Patent office in order to be awarded
the first of two patents were successfully achieved before starting my
business analyst/sales/software development phase of my career.
A very memorable summer job was a
junior counselor at a summer day camp, responsible for four to six-year
olds - - - the twenty-or-so little ‘teachers’ summer-schooled me in
laughter.
During the summers of college, I
worked for temporary agencies were I used my then “40+ wpm” when I was
placed at Bergdorf Goodman and Manufacturers Hanover Trust as a data
input clerk (inputting client information and NYC property tax checks
and their accompanying forms, respectively). Telephone sales of credit
card insurance and the sale of magazines were jobs were I used the
telephone-voice that was first used in an after-school job as
combination front desk reception, telephone operator, and elevator
operator.
The other after-school job during
high school, a janitor for a few days per trimester, provided the
memory of listening to the radio broadcast of Bucky Dent hitting the
winning home run in the tie-breaker game at the end of the 1978 season.
